Saffron leaders berate Rahul Gandhi for holding rally on the anniversary of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots

New Delhi, Nov 1 (UNI) The ruling BJP held demonstrations and ‘padyatras’, with its top leaders, including party president Nitin Nabin, taking to the streets in several parts of the country to counter the INDIA bloc’s massive mobilisation in the national capital—the ‘Chalo Dilli’ rally against alleged irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls.
Specifically targeting the Congress, senior BJP leaders berated Rahul Gandhi for holding the rally on a day coinciding with the anniversary of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi.
“Rahul Gandhi, listen carefully. You cannot hide the black history of November 1, nor can you escape accountability for the tears of Delhi’s traders. India is a robust democracy which will be governed not by your ‘riot-based politics’ but by the Constitution and the people’s mandate,” union Minister J.P. Nadda wrote .
“This rally of yours will prove to be the final nail in the coffin of the Congress party's political downfall,” Nadda warned, describing it as a “foolish, orchestrated drama” by parties “defeated and rejected by voters.”
The BJP also held a march along with families of victims of the anti-Sikh riots in West Delhi where the violence unfolded after the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Senior BJP leaders, including Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and union Minister Hardeep Puri, participated in the march.
“Atrocities against innocent Sikh men and women were openly encouraged and aided by goons and Congress leaders on the streets of Delhi in 1984. We continue to seethe with rage over the mindless massacre of our people and the way we were made targets of unbridled hatred,” Puri said.
Nabin led a ‘Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao’ padyatra in Rohtak, the stronghold of senior Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda and son Deepender Singh Hooda, in neighbouring Haryana. BJP and Mahayuti allies also held a ‘Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy’ padyatra in Mumbai.
“The BJP is committed to protecting democracy. Let me make it clear that no one can harm the Narendra Modi government, the BJP will form the government again in 2029,” Nabin said.
Senior Congress leaders claimed the BJP's counter-rallies on the same day as a political event by Opposition parties reflected its nervousness. BJP sources, however, said the party this time designed its counter-campaign to “pay back the Opposition in the same coin” instead of holding a press conference after the event. When cadres see their leaders taking to the streets, they get galvanised, they said, focusing their attack largely against Rahul Gandhi.
Top BJP leaders accused him of engineering a “calculated conspiracy to plunge the nation into anarchy in the name of democracy”. “The anti-Sikh riots took place on this very day, and Rahul Gandhi should have apologised for them instead of organising protests,” Nabin said.
According to Nadda, the November 1 rally was aimed at hurting the sentiments of the Sikh community, triggering violence in Delhi to bring down a democratically elected government, affecting traders’ earnings during the festive season and damaging India’s reputation.
“On this very day, goons nurtured by the Congress party massacred our innocent Sikh brethren. Thousands of Sikh families were rendered homeless overnight, and thousands of women were widowed.
“Observe the insensitivity of the Congress and the petty mindset of Rahul Gandhi. On this dark day, a day when the nation ought to be remembering its martyrs and victims, Rahul Gandhi stands at Ramlila Maidan seeking only to further his own political agenda,” Nadda added.
