Sangrur, Oct 8 (UNI) A 20-year-old newly married woman, who was reportedly a few months pregnant, allegedly died by suicide after hanging herself at her house in Jharon village near Cheema in Sangrur district, police said on Thursday.
Cheema police station SHO Sub-Inspector Raj Kumar said the woman was originally from Romana village near Bajakhana in Faridkot district and had married a resident of Jharon village around one-and-a-half years ago.
According to the police, preliminary information suggested that the woman was allegedly being subjected to frequent harassment by her husband.
She subsequently hanged herself from a ceiling fan at her house, the SHO said.
After the incident, family members rushed her to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
The SHO said that on the statement of the deceased woman's brother, Navdeep Singh, police registered a case under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against her husband and mother-in-law.
The police are investigating the matter.
The body will be handed over to the family after the post-mortem examination, police said.
