Search & rescue to trace the whereabouts of tourist couple from Madhya Pradesh in Meghalaya

Shillong, May 27 (UNI) The whereabouts of a tourist couple from Madhya Pradesh who went missing during a visit to Sohra, also known as Cherrapunjee, a popular tourist destination in Meghalaya, remains unknown.
Meghalaya police along with State Disaster Response Force and villagers, has launched a massive search and rescue operation to trace missing couple identified as 27-year-old Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife Sonam from Indore, who have gone missing since May 24.
The couple hired a two-wheeler from one Sagar Sen Samal of Keating Road here on May 22 and then rode to Sohra. They were supposed to return the two-wheeler after four days.
The missing of the couple came to light after their scooter with the keys was found abandoned on May 23 at Sohrarim near Golden Pines Dhaba by villagers.
The villagers informed Sordar (village chief) of Sohrarim who immediately alerted the matter to the police.
Paiadonbor Kharpuri, Secretary of Sohrarim village said the villagers have extended their hand to the search and rescue team to locate the couple.
“We have started searching for the two people since Sunday across villages and treacherous places, but so far we haven’t been successful,” he told UNI.
A police official said the couple visited Mawlakhait village and then proceeded to the double decker bridge in Nongriat village on May 22 with a local guide.
“The couple checked into Shipara Homestay at Nongriat on May 22 where they stayed overnight and checked out the next morning and then proceeded to Mawlakhait village without a guide,” Vivek Syiem, the district police chief of East Khasi Hills, said.
Their mobile phone geolocation indicated they were at Mawlakhait village thereafter they went missing, and their mobile phones are now switched off.
“Our teams are still searching for the missing couple with the help of the local villagers. There is no trace of them yet,” Syiem said.
This is the second such incident in Meghalaya since April, when a 41-year-old Hungarian tourist, Puskas Zsolt, was found dead near Ramdait village along the trail to Nongrait village , 12 days after he was reported missing .
Police ruled out any foul play in the Zsolt,’s death and suspected he might have died after a fall.
After that incident, the Meghalaya government issued an advisory for the safety of tourists. They were urged to exercise extreme caution near cliffs, jungles, and water bodies, and hire certified local guides.
