Shanta Kumar questions closure of 100 Himachal schools, seeks accountability for public spending

Ashok Raina
Dharamshala, Oct 7 (UNI) Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and former union Minister Shanta Kumar on Wednesday questioned the state government's decision to close 100 government schools that have no students, saying the move reflected a serious failure in educational planning.
In a statement, Kumar said the government had decided to shut 100 such schools, including 77 primary and 23 middle schools. He said around 900 government schools had already been closed in the state over the past few years.
Kumar questioned why these schools were opened in the first place if not a single student had enrolled.
He said substantial public money must have been spent on constructing school buildings, appointing teachers and providing other facilities.
He sought details from the state government on how many such schools had been opened and subsequently closed, and how much public money had been spent on their buildings, teachers and other infrastructure.
Kumar alleged that many such schools were opened near elections to garner additional votes from particular areas. “What kind of government opens schools where there is not even a single student to study?” he questioned.
He urged the Opposition to obtain complete information on the issue and raise it before the government.
