Shimla tunnel work in Himachal Pradesh under scrutiny after cracks appear in residential buildings

Shimla, Oct 17 (UNI)Shimla administration has constituted a committee to inspect the latest status of the four-lane tunnel construction near Sanjauli-Bhattakufar-Dhalli in Himachal Pradesh, following reports of cracks in residential buildings allegedly caused by blasting.
It was decided that resuming the work to be taken after an IIT Roorkee team submits its assessment.
Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap on Saturday held a meeting with representatives of the Four-Lane Affected Committee to review complaints regarding non-compliance with directions issued by the district administration to the construction companies.
The meeting was informed that construction of the tunnel had been stopped following cracks in residential buildings in the affected areas, allegedly caused by blasting during the work.
Kashyap said a team from IIT Roorkee had been assigned to inspect the affected areas and damaged buildings and submit a detailed report to the district administration.
The team has already visited the tunnel and surrounding areas and is expected to submit its report within a week.
He said further decisions regarding the tunnel construction would be taken on the basis of the findings and recommendations of the report.
During the meeting, representatives of the affected committee also alleged that the construction company was carrying out tunnel work secretly despite the stoppage. Taking note of the complaint, the Deputy Commissioner constituted a committee under the chairmanship of the two Additional District Magistrates to ascertain the latest status of the construction work.
The committee includes the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Shimla Rural, the Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department's Kasumpti Circle and the Tehsildar, Shimla Rural.
The committee has been directed to inspect the site on October 22 and submit a report on the current status of the tunnel construction.
Additional District Magistrate (Law and Order) Pankaj Sharma, Additional District Magistrate (Protocol) Gyan Sagar Negi, District Revenue Officer Shivani Bhardwaj and representatives of the Four-Lane Affected Committee, among others, attended the meeting.
