Singapore, Haryana deepen cooperation in skills, water and urban development

Singapore, Oct 6 (UNI) Singapore and India's northern state of Haryana agreed on Tuesday to deepen cooperation in skills, education, water management and urban development, as the state seeks to draw on the city-state's expertise to support rapid economic and infrastructure growth.
Singapore Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan held talks with Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, with discussions also covering technology, innovation and ways to expand employment opportunities for the state's young workforce, the Haryana government said.
Saini said Singapore's experience in managing water resources, urban infrastructure and technology could help Haryana respond to the pressures of rapid development.
"Cooperation with Singapore will help the state adopt water treatment, water conservation, urban planning and modern technology solutions more effectively," Saini said, according to the statement.
The two sides discussed expanding cooperation in vocational training and education, developing stronger links between skills and employment, and creating opportunities for young people to gain training and access jobs overseas, the statement said.
Balakrishnan said Singapore remained committed to strengthening its partnership with India and Haryana and discussed initiatives that could connect Haryana's youth with skills programmes and international employment opportunities, according to the statement.
The talks also highlighted the potential for greater use of technology in water management and urban planning, areas that are becoming increasingly important as Haryana's cities and industrial centres expand.
Saini said closer ties with Singapore could bring together Haryana's large young workforce and Singapore's technical expertise, helping the state prepare workers for changing demands in the economy while pursuing more sustainable growth.
Haryana, which surrounds the national capital region and is home to Gurugram, a major corporate and technology centre, has been seeking investment and international expertise in infrastructure, manufacturing, technology and workforce development.
