Sirsa Congress MP Selja calls for massive turnout at Nov 1 ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ rally

Sirsa, Oct 29 (UNI) Congress MP from Sirsa Kumari Selja has called on people from Haryana and across the country to participate in the party’s ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on November 1, describing it as an important movement to defend democracy, the Constitution and citizens’ voting rights.
Selja, a former union Cabinet minister and Congress general secretary, alleged that the BJP-led central government was weakening the autonomy of democratic institutions and that serious questions had been raised about the fairness of the electoral process.
She called for an impartial investigation into allegations of vote theft, asserting that the people remained supreme in a democracy.
She said citizens must raise their voices peacefully and constitutionally to protect their democratic rights and ensure that constitutional institutions were not used for political purposes.
Selja said she had held detailed discussions with Haryana Congress in-charge Sanjay Dutt and state Congress president Rao Narender Singh on preparations for the rally, organisational coordination and ensuring a strong turnout from Haryana.
Congress workers had been urged to reach out to people in villages and towns to mobilise participation, she said.
Expressing confidence that Haryana would have a significant presence at the rally, Selja said the event would be held under the leadership of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. She said the Congress would continue its campaign to safeguard democratic values, constitutional rights and free and fair elections.
Separately, Selja criticised the Haryana government over Gurugram’s pollution-control measures, citing a newspaper report that, according to her, found 10 of the city’s 24 road-dust cleaning machines non-functional despite a maintenance contract worth ₹6 crore.
She further claimed that Gurugram already had 48 fewer machines than the prescribed target, raising questions about the city’s preparedness to tackle air pollution.
Selja said the reported situation exposed shortcomings in the government’s pollution-control efforts, alleging that Gurugram’s air quality deteriorated every winter without adequate preventive action. She said residents needed clean air and effective measures rather than publicity.
