Six patients die at SLNMCH, Odisha Congress demands Rs 25 lakh compensation for bereaved families

Koraput (Odisha), June 5 (UNI) Odisha Congress on Thursday demanded compensation of Rs 25 lakh each for the families of the six patients who died at Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College
and Hospital (SLNMCH).
Addressing the media, Congress Legislative Party Leader and Pottangi MLA Ram Chandra Kadam, former MLA Nimai Sarkar, and senior leader Meenakshi Bahinipati strongly criticized Odisha Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling's brief visit to SLNMCH in the wake of the deaths of six patients in quick succession on Tuesday.
Bahinipati warned that the party would intensify its agitation and block the highway if the government did not promptly announce compensation.
The Congress leaders expressed deep dissatisfaction over what they termed a “symbolic visit” by the minister, questioning the intent and outcome of his brief inspection and review meeting on Thursday.
They also alleged that their delegation was denied permission to meet the minister during his visit.
During his short visit, Mahaling inspected the surgery ward and held discussions with hospital authorities.
He later told the media that preliminary reports indicated the deaths were due to severe pre-existing conditions, not medical negligence.
The minister said that a team of doctors from the state health department had already initiated an inquiry and assured that appropriate action would be taken based on the findings of the doctors’ report.
