Hyderabad, Oct 2 (UNI) Rajya Sabha member and National BC Welfare Association president R. Krishnaiah has urged the Andhra Pradesh government to take up the issue of the 34 per cent reservation for Backwards Classes (BCs) in local bodies with the Centre and pursue a constitutional amendment following the Andhra Pradesh High Court's decision striking down the quota.
In a statement on Friday, Krishnaiah said 14 BC organisations had demanded that Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu discuss the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and seek a permanent constitutional solution.
He argued that merely approaching the Supreme Court would lead to the petitioners facing the existing legal position on reservation ceilings and suggested that a larger Bench would have to reconsider the issue.
He said BCs, whom he claimed constitute 56 per cent of the population, continued to face inadequate representation in education, employment and political institutions. He questioned the application of the 50 per cent ceiling to BC reservations and said a constitutional amendment was necessary to provide a lasting solution.
Krishnaiah appealed to Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to coordinate with the Centre and build support for the proposed amendment. He said Naidu, as an NDA ally, should take the lead in pursuing the matter with the union government.
