Southwest Monsoon sets in over Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, May 24 (UNI) The Southwest Monsoon has set in over Kerala on Saturday against the normal date of June 1.
The Southwest Monsoon has further advanced into remaining parts of south Arabian Sea, some parts of westcentral and eastcentral Arabian Sea, entire Lakshadweep area, Kerala, Mahe, some parts of Karnataka, remaining parts of Maldives and Comorin area; many parts of Tamil Nadu, remaining parts of southwest and eastcentral Bay of Bengal, some parts of westcentral and north Bay of Bengal, and some parts of Mizoram on May 24.
Conditions are favourable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into some more parts of central Arabian Sea, entire Goa, some parts of Maharashtra & AndhraPradesh, some more parts of Karnataka, remaining parts of Tamil Nadu, some more parts of westcentral & North Bay of Bengal, some more parts of parts of Northeastern states and some parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during next 2-3 days.
The Well Marked Low pressure area over eastcentral Arabian Sea off south Konkan coast concentrated into a depression and lay centered at 0530 hrs, on May 24, over east-central Arabian Sea and adjoining south Konkan coast.
It moved slowly eastward with a speed of 6 kmph during the past 3 hours and lay centred at 0830 hrs on May 24 over the same region close to south Konkan coast near latitude 17.20 N & longitude 73.20 E, about 30 km north-northwest of Ratnagiri and 70 km south of Dapoli.
It is likely to continue to move nearly eastwards and cross the south Konkan coast between Ratnagiri and Dapoli as a depression by noon of May 24.
The trough from eastcentral Arabian sea to south Chhattisgarh across the cyclonic circulation associated with the depression area over eastcentral Arabian sea and adjoining south Konkan coast, south Madhya Maharashtra, south Marathwada, and north Telanganabetween 1.5 & 3.1 km above mean sea level, persists.
A low-pressure area is likely to form over westcentral and adjoining North Bay of Bengal around May 27.
Rain occurred at most places in Kerala and Lakshadweep. Very Heavy rainfall report in cm is: Kumarakom_AWS (Kottayamdistrict) 12. Heavy rainfall reports in cm are: Choondy AWS (Ernakulam district) 11, Thiruvananthapuram Airport, Peerumedu (Idukkidistrict), Chalakkudy (Thrissur district) & Kalamassery AWS (Ernakulam district) 10 each, Thiruvananthapuram, Thodupuzha (Idukkidistrict), Idukki, Munnar (Idukki district), Piravam (Ernakulam district), Kodungallur (Thrissur district), Angadipuram (Malappuramdistrict), Vythiri (Wayanad district), Mahe (Puducherry UT), Vaikkom AWS (Kottayam district) & Thennala AWS (Malappuram district) 9 each, Karipur AP (Malappuram district), NAS Kochi (Ernakulam district), Kunnamkulam & Irinjalakuda (both in Thrissur district), Ponnani (Malappuram district) & Urumi AWS (Kozhikode district) 8 each.
Heavy rainfall (7cm to 11cm in 24 hours) is likely to occurat a fewplaceswith VeryHeavy rainfall (12 cm to 20 cm in 24 hours) to Extremely Heavy rainfall ( > 20cm in 24 hours) at isolated places over Kerala from 24th to 26th May 2025. Heavy (7-11cm in 24 hours) to very heavy (12-20cm in 24 hours) rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated placesover Kerala from 27th to30th May 2025.
Heavy (7-11cm in 24 hours) rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places over Lakshadweep from 24th to 26th May 2025. Heavy rainfall (7- 11 cm in 24 hours) to Very Heavy rainfall (12- 20 cm in 24 hours) with Extremely heavy rainfall ( > 20cm in 24 hours) (Red Warning) is very likely to occur at one or two places in the districts of Kannur & Kasaragod on May 24.
Heavy rainfall (7- 11 cm in 24 hours) to Very Heavy rainfall (12- 20 cm in 24 hours) (Orange Warning) is very likely to occur at one or two places in the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode & Wayanad on May 24.
