Hyderabad, May 24 (UNI) Telangana Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister Capt N Uttam Kumar Reddy launched a blistering attack on the previous BRS government, holding it responsible for the collapse of the Kaleshwaram project and the state's mounting financial burden.
He accused the former regime of scrapping the Congress-conceived Tummidihatti project out of political jealousy and opting for Kaleshwaram to pocket commissions.
Speaking to the media after reviewing development works in Huzurnagar and Kodad, Uttam said the Kaleshwaram project’s cost was inflated from Rs 38,000 crore to Rs 1.2 lakh crore without justification, and its collapse is a direct result of arrogance and corruption. He said the BRS government’s flawed decision-making has left Telangana with a Rs 16,000 crore annual debt repayment burden, which will haunt future generations.
Criticising the BRS for mocking the National Dam Safety Authority's report, he questioned their failure to act when they were in power. He added that multiple warnings from engineers and experts were ignored in the pursuit of commissions. The Minister also condemned the BRS for erasing Congress-era project names, calling it a petty insult to national icons like Indira Gandhi and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
Uttam reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to irrigation sector reforms, including the revival of pending projects and responsible spending. Highlighting achievements under the Congress government, he pointed to record paddy procurement and historic bonuses for fine rice farmers, asserting that the new administration is delivering on its promises.
