Space is emerging as new frontier of warfare: Dr Rajeshwar Singh

Lucknow, Sep 27 (UNI) Dr Rajeshwar Singh, BJP MLA from Sarojininagar assembly segment of Lucknow, said that the rapid advancement of military capabilities in space is emerging as a major future national security challenge. Future conflicts may extend beyond land, sea and air, with Space and cyberspace becoming critical fronts, he claimed.
He said the US disclosure regarding ‘space control weapons’, growing space capabilities of China and Russia, and initiatives such as the Golden Dome missile defence system signal a rapidly changing global security environment. Any attack on satellites could disrupt communication, navigation, banking and military systems, he added.
Dr Singh, in a statement here on Sunday, said that through Mission Shakti in 2019, India demonstrated its space defence capability. The approximately Rs 26,968 crore Space-Based Surveillance (SBS-3) programme, involving 52 surveillance satellites, further reflects India’s growing capabilities in space surveillance.
He emphasised that India must also focus on greater investment in R&D. Increased public and private investment, advanced research, and stronger support for scientists and innovators are essential for technological self-reliance.
“A soldier standing at the border and a scientist working in a laboratory are both defenders of the nation. The weapons and methods of warfare are changing—yesterday it was the sword; today it is code, satellites and AI,” Dr Singh said.
Calling upon India’s youth to embrace innovation, skills and research, he said the nation’s future technological strength and security will increasingly depend on their curiosity and capabilities. The time to prepare is now.
