New Delhi, Sep 16 (UNI) The Indian Stock Markets on Wednesday bounced back and snapped a two-day losing streak. Nifty finished above 23,200, supported by broad-based buying across sectors, barring IT.
Easing oil prices also provided some relief to the market. The market opened higher but came under pressure in the initial hours.
At close, the Sensex was up 332.63 points or 0.45 percent at 74,336.45, and the Nifty was up 99.00 points or 0.43 percent at 23,217.60. Nifty Midcap 100 index ended flat, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 index closed marginally lower.
Among sectors, all indices ended in the green except IT which was down by 1.5pc and pharma, with FMCG and PSU Bank gaining more than 1pc each.
On Nifty, the gainers were SBI Life Insurance, HDFC Life, ITC, Axis Bank and SBI, while TCS, Wipro, Infosys, Tech Mahindra and Bajaj Finserv were among the major losers.
Over 200 stocks touched 52-week low. These included HEG, Afcons Infrastructure, Whirlpool of India, IRCTC, MedPlus Health Services, Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency, Jupiter Wagons, United Breweries, NSDL, EID Parry, UPL, Cello World, Ircon International, IEX, CIE Automotive India, Shree Cement, Rail Vikas Nigam, Ambuja Cements, Kama Holdings, India Cements, among others.
Jewellery stocks registered after the Bureau of India Standards increased the hallmarking fee by 67pc to Rs 75 per article. Kalyan Jewellers India and PC Jeweller were down around 4-5pc. Newly-listed Lalithaa Jewellery Mart shares hit 5pc lower circuit.
Rupee traded slightly higher by 0.05pc at 95.95, supported by minor profit booking in crude oil.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited said, "Indian equities advanced in tandem with regional markets as easing crude oil prices and a largely priced-in U.S. Fed rate hike improved investor sentiment. The constructive mood was further reinforced by a moderation in Japanese bond yields ahead of the BoJ's policy decision, supporting risk appetite across Asia. Domestically, large-cap stocks led the gains, driven by strength in banking, FMCG and automobile counters, while the IT sector witnessed selective profit booking following its recent outperformance."
"Investors now await the Fed Chair's commentary for deeper insight into the future rate trajectory, with the guidance expected to influence global liquidity conditions, capital flows and the near-term direction of financial markets." UNI VK SAS
