Suspected cow poisoning linked to tiger deaths: DCF

Mysuru, June 27 (UNI) In a disturbing development from Karnataka’s Male Mahadeshwara Hills, the deaths of five tigers and one domestic cow have triggered a high-alert forensic investigation. Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) Chakrapani, who is overseeing the probe, revealed today that preliminary findings point to possible poisoning — potentially through the carcass of a cow intentionally laced with toxic substances.
Speaking to reporters at the scene, Chakrapani confirmed that samples from the five deceased tigers and the cow were collected during post-mortem examinations and dispatched to three separate laboratories: the forensic labs in Mysuru and Bengaluru, and the veterinary laboratory in Hebbal, Bengaluru.
“We are sending the samples to multiple labs to ensure repeated testing and scientific confirmation,” Chakrapani said, emphasizing that the internal bleeding observed in all the tigers suggests a strong likelihood of poisoning, possibly from pesticide-related toxins.
Suspicion has now shifted towards the possibility of deliberate poisoning by the cow's owner. "There is a belief that someone may have poisoned the cow, and the tigers might have died after feeding on it," Chakrapani added. The forensic and departmental investigations are running concurrently, with multiple veterinary experts involved.
To prevent further ecological damage, authorities are now destroying both the tiger and cow carcasses. “We must incinerate them to avoid the risk of secondary poisoning if other wildlife consumes the remains,” the DCF stated.
This incident has sparked outrage among conservationists and wildlife officials, who are demanding stricter monitoring in forest buffer zones and tougher penalties for any form of wildlife endangerment.
Further updates will follow as test results and the investigation progress.
