Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana begins indefinite 'rasta roko' on Pune-Bengaluru Highway

Kolhapur, Nov 3 (UNI) The Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS) on Tuesday launched an indefinite 'rasta roko' agitation on the Pune-Bengaluru highway near the Kini toll plaza, demanding a first instalment of Rs 4,500 to Rs 5,000 per tonne for sugarcane.
A large number of farmers began assembling at the protest site, where former MP and SSS president Raju Shetty also arrived to lead the agitation. The blockade is likely to disrupt vehicular traffic on the busy highway.
The dispute over sugarcane prices between farmers' organisations and sugar mill owners remains unresolved, with a recent meeting involving Guardian Minister Prakash Abitkar and millers failing to reach a consensus.
Following the failure of the meeting, the SSS intensified its agitation and reiterated that sugarcane harvesting would not be allowed until its demand for the first instalment was met.
A meeting between farmers' organisations and sugar industry representatives was held last week under the chairmanship of Guardian Minister Abitkar. However, as no agreement could be reached, the SSS had announced an indefinite road blockade from November 3.
Accordingly, a large number of farmers and protesters gathered at the Kini toll plaza and began the highway blockade from 11 am on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the district police authorities issued notices to Shetty and other SSS leaders, warning them against participating in the agitation as it could disrupt vehicular movement. Despite the notices, Shetty led the protest at the Kini toll plaza.UNI SSS AAB.
