Telangana BJP questions Sonia Gandhi's remarks on Rajiv Gandhi becoming PM

Hyderabad, Oct 28 (UNI) BJP Telangana Chief Spokesperson and Media In-charge N V Subash on Wednesday questioned Congress leader Sonia Gandhi's reported claim that she had opposed her husband Rajiv Gandhi becoming Prime Minister, alleging a contradiction between the statement and the Congress leadership's approach to political succession.
Reacting to the reported contents of Sonia Gandhi's memoir 'Belonging: A Journey of Love', Subash referred to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's media adviser Sanjaya Baru's book 'The Accidental Prime Minister' and questioned the role Sonia Gandhi allegedly played in the functioning of the UPA government.
He asked how Sonia Gandhi could have opposed Rajiv Gandhi becoming Prime Minister while, according to him, aspiring to see her son Rahul Gandhi occupy the top post.
Subash contrasted the Congress leadership with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asserting that the BJP-led NDA government had sought public support through governance and development initiatives.
Alleging that the Congress continued to treat the Prime Minister's post as a family entitlement, he said leadership in a democracy should be based on public mandate, performance and accountability rather than dynastic succession.
Referring to the political developments following Rajiv Gandhi's assassination in 1991 and the debate over Sonia Gandhi's possible elevation as Prime Minister in 2004, Subash asked the Congress leadership to clarify what he described as a contradiction between personal reluctance and political ambition.
He also questioned the Congress's protests against the Modi government and said Sonia Gandhi should advise her children, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, to refrain from taking to the streets over issues he described as petty.
The BJP leader's remarks came in response to the reported account in Sonia Gandhi's memoir, with Subash questioning the Congress leadership's position on political succession.
