Telangana CM chairs all-party MPs meeting on Banakacharla project

Hyderabad, June 18 (UNI) In a significant political development, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy convened an all-party MPs meeting at the State Secretariat this evening to deliberate on Andhra Pradesh’s proposed Godavari–Banakacharla Link project issue.

The meeting witnessed the participation of Members of Parliament from across the political spectrum, highlighting the seriousness of the issue concerning the interests of Telangana farmers.
Prominent attendees included Telangana ministers and MPs Renuka Chowdhury, Mallu Ravi, Balaram Nayak, Suresh Shetkar, Kunduru Raghuveer Reddy, Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy, Anil Kumar Yadav, and Raghuram Reddy. From the opposition, BJP MPs D K Aruna and Raghunandan Rao, AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi, and BRS MP Vaddiraju Ravichandra were also present.

Later, speaking to the media, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy emphasised that the meeting was not politically motivated but aimed at safeguarding the larger interests of Telangana and its farming community.

“The interests of Telangana farmers are of paramount importance to our government. We must move beyond politics and work collectively,” he asserted.
Tracing the historical context of the water-sharing conflict, the Chief Minister pointed out that after the formation of Telangana, an Apex Council meeting was held on September 21, 2016, where then Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) suggested that 3,000 TMC of Godavari water was flowing wastefully into the sea.
He further noted that on August 13, 2019, KCR declared that Rayalaseema would be turned into "Ratanala Seema," signifying an agreement to divert Godavari waters.

Revanth Reddy revealed that KCR and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy held four bilateral meetings at Pragathi Bhavan, laying the groundwork for the transfer of Godavari waters to Rayalaseema.
“The minutes of these meetings, revealed by former Ministers Etela Rajender and Buggana Rajendranath, are now being cited by Andhra Pradesh to claim Banakacharla, undermining Telangana’s water rights,” he cautioned.

In response to this threat, the Chief Minister proposed a united front. “We are ready to provide official documentation supporting Telangana’s rightful claim.
"We will seek appointments with the Prime Minister and raise this issue during the Parliament session,” he said, calling for collective representation.

He also stressed that if political efforts fail, Telangana will not hesitate to take the legal route. “If justice is not achieved through political dialogue, we will pursue it legally. Let us move forward together,” he added.
The proposed Godavari–Banakacherla Link project is being opposed by Telangana, citing legal, environmental, and procedural violations,
The G-B Link project – also referred to as the Godavari–Krishna–Penna Linking Scheme – proposes to divert 200 TMCFT of floodwaters from the Godavari at Polavaram to the drought-prone Rayalaseema region in Andhra Pradesh’s Penna basin. The project envisages constructing a new reservoir at Bollapalli in Guntur district with a storage capacity of 150 TMCFT.
