Telangana DCA chief directs intensified crackdown on spurious and habit-forming drugs

Hyderabad, May 17 (UNI) In a determined move to combat the menace of spurious and habit-forming drugs, the Director General of Drugs Control Administration (DCA), Telangana, Shahnawaz Qasim, IPS, convened a high-level State Conference on Saturday at the DCA Headquarters.
The meeting brought together all enforcement officers, including Drugs Inspectors, Assistant Directors, and Deputy Directors from across the state.
During the conference, the Director General conducted a detailed review of ongoing enforcement activities and issued firm directives to intensify surprise raids and maintain heightened vigilance to curb the circulation of counterfeit and illegal medicines.
He instructed officers to dismantle networks involved in the manufacture, distribution, and sale of spurious drugs, and to keep a close watch on habitual offenders. Officers were advised to seek police support wherever necessary to ensure effective enforcement.

Shahnawaz Qasim emphasized that the prevention of abuse of habit-forming drugs is a top priority for the administration. He called for rigorous efforts to stop the indiscriminate sale and misuse of such substances across Telangana.
In line with the vision of the Hon’ble Chief Minister to make Telangana a drug-free state, the Director General assured that stringent action would be taken to prevent the misuse of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, in coordination with the Prohibition and Excise Department.
Officers were also directed to carry out regular surprise checks at medical sales outlets, including mandatory QR code verifications and enhanced surveillance measures to detect counterfeit drugs, thereby ensuring public health and safety. Additionally, they were instructed to act firmly against individuals involved in publishing or promoting misleading advertisements about diseases and disorders.
The Director General urged all officers to recognise their critical role in safeguarding public health and to remain vigilant in detecting and addressing offences.
Citizens have been encouraged to report any illegal activities related to medicines via the DCA's toll-free number 1800-599-6969, which is operational from 1030 hours to 1700 hours on all working days.
