Telangana: Kavitha calls for separate SC, ST Commissions with enforcement powers

Hyderabad, Oct 11 (UNI) Telangana Rakshana Sena (TRS) president Kalvakuntla Kavitha has demanded separate commissions for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) in Telangana, stressing the need to empower them with enforceable authority to ensure justice for the affected communities.
Speaking at a roundtable meeting organised by the SC/ST Employees Association at the Press Club, Basheerbagh, on Sunday, she said the issues faced by SCs and STs differed and required separate mechanisms to address discrimination, exploitation and atrocities.
Kavitha said commissions should have powers to ensure implementation of their decisions rather than merely conducting inquiries and making recommendations.
She called for a constitutional amendment to grant enforceable powers to commissions dealing with SCs, STs, women, human rights and child rights.
She also stressed the need for representation from the affected communities and members who understood their problems.
Kavitha said her party would continue to fight for separate SC and ST commissions and stronger powers for these bodies, adding that they should be made effective instruments for delivering justice.
