Telangana: NPRD demands census data on all 21 categories of disabilities

Hyderabad, Sep 30 (UNI) The Telangana State Committee of the National Platform for the Rights of Disabled (NPRD) staged a protest in front of the State Census Director's office at Koti, demanding that the 2027 Census collect data on all 21 categories of disabilities recognised under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.
NPRD State General Secretary M Adivaiah said comprehensive disability data was essential for ensuring access to education, employment, healthcare, rehabilitation and social security. A representation was submitted to R Gnanasekhar, Deputy Registrar General (Census & Tabulation), who assured the protesters that their demand would be brought to the notice of the Central Government.
Adivaiah questioned the decision to collect information on only nine categories of disabilities and demanded inclusion of all 21 categories recognised under the 2016 Act. He warned that the organisation would intensify its agitation if comprehensive data was not collected.
NPRD State President K Venkat cited the Telangana government's 2014 household survey, which identified 10,48,822 persons with disabilities in the state, and stressed the need for accurate enumeration to ensure eligible persons receive government services and benefits.
The protesters said failure to record comprehensive disability data could result in undercounting and adversely affect the delivery of welfare and support services.
