Temple administration vows to reclaim encroached Puri Jagannath land

Bhubaneswar, Oct 2(UNI) Days after the Board of Revenue restored a disputed parcel of Jagannath land to the temple estate, the Puri Sri Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has resolved to step up legal measures to protect and recover the Lord’s properties. The SJTA will take all necessary legal measures to protect and recover properties belonging to Lord Sri Jagannath and will not allow their illegal transfer, occupation or encroachment, temple chief administrator Dr Aravind Kumar Padhee said. His remarks came after the Board of Revenue, Cuttack, dismissed a revision petition concerning a valuable parcel of land in Talabania/Kundheibenta Sahi mouza in Puri, holding that it was originally recorded as the Amrutamanohi property (deity being titleholder of the land)of Lord Sri Jagannath. Padhee said the administration would remain vigilant against attempts to illegally occupy or transfer the Lord’s properties and would take action against encroachment and other irregularities in accordance with law. The Board, in its order, observed that there was no evidence that the subsequent transactions relied upon by the petitioner had obtained the mandatory prior approval of the State Government under Section 16(2) of the Sri Jagannath Temple Act, 1955.
It later cancelled the earlier order in the matter and the non-final Record of Rights prepared in the petitioner’s name. The Board directed the settlement authorities to record the disputed land as Amrutamanohi property in the name of “Sri Jagannath Mahaprabhu Bije, Puri, marfat (custodian) Temple Managing Committee”.
The temple administration has also been directed to initiate steps to bring the remaining properties under the concerned Sabik Khata (old, original record) into the Lord’s name. Padhee said the record correction process would be expedited by the Puri tehsildar under the supervision of the district Collector. It’s pertinent to note here that the Odisha government has stepped up efforts to protect and restore the properties of Lord Jagannath, with 31,906.52 acres of land across 17 districts already recorded in the name of Mahaprabhu Shri Jagannath. Acting on Orissa High Court directives, stringent action is being taken to remove encroachments from Shri Jagannath Temple Administration land, particularly along national and State highways. Steps are also being taken to expedite pending revenue cases relating to the temple properties, concluded the officials. UNIMK AAB
