Textiles Ministry highlights reforms for cotton farmers, industry in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, Oct 6 (UNI) The Ministry of Textiles on Tuesday highlighted a series of reforms aimed at empowering cotton farmers, improving productivity and quality, and promoting digital transformation and ease of doing business across the cotton value chain at a Reform Utsav 2026 event here.
The showcase event was organised by the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) and brought together government officials, cotton farmers, textile industry representatives and other stakeholders.
Telangana Agricultural Production Commissioner and Agriculture and Cooperation Department Secretary K Surendra Mohan, who was the chief guest, stressed the need for coordinated efforts among government agencies, industry and farmers to strengthen the cotton and textile sectors.
He also highlighted the benefits of the High-Density Planting System (HDPS) over conventional cultivation practices and called for coordinated efforts and suitable policy measures to expand its adoption in Telangana.
CCI Chairman-cum-Managing Director Lalit Kumar Gupta said the corporation was transitioning towards transparent, technology-enabled and farmer-centric operations while focusing on farmer engagement, operational efficiency and competitiveness across the cotton value chain.
The event showcased initiatives including the Kapas Kisan App for digital engagement with cotton farmers and access to procurement information, the Mission for Cotton Productivity -- Kapas Kanti, removal of Quality Control Orders (QCOs) on cotton and CotBiz, a digital system for cotton bale and seed billing.
A progressive farmer from Akola shared his experience with HDPS, stating that its coverage in the district had increased from 5,000 hectares initially to around 30,000 hectares, while potential yields had risen from 12 to 18 quintals per acre.
He said the system helped address labour shortages, facilitate mechanisation, improve weed management and reduce cultivation costs.
Telangana Special Commissioner for Cooperation and Registrar of Cooperative Societies Rahul Raj P S shared insights into cotton procurement under the Minimum Support Price (MSP) framework, stressing institutional coordination and efficient procurement operations.
PJTSAU Director of Research M Balram called for greater adoption of scientific cultivation practices and collaboration among agricultural universities, government agencies, farmers and industry to improve cotton productivity and quality.
The Central Silk Board also showcased initiatives including Silkmark digitisation, Seri Tourism and the 'Mera Resham Mera Abhiman' programme.
Industry representatives highlighted issues relating to Kasturi Cotton quality, procurement and processing, while TEXPROCIL officials presented the Kasturi Cotton Bharat programme covering quality upgradation, certification, branding and traceability.
The event also featured discussions on the importance of quality, consistency and value addition in improving the competitiveness of Indian cotton in the global textile value chain.
The programme provided a platform for policymakers, farmers, industry representatives, entrepreneurs and technical institutions to exchange views on digital adoption, technology, productivity, quality improvement and stakeholder coordination across the cotton and silk sectors.
