Three held for running ‘professional bailor’ racket in Odisha courts

Bhubaneswar, Nov 6 (UNI) Berhampur Police have arrested three persons for allegedly running an organised racket of professional bailors who repeatedly used the same land records to furnish bail sureties in multiple criminal cases before courts in the District Court Complex.
The racket came to light during an investigation into the alleged systematic misuse of land Records of Rights (RoRs), including suspected forged documents, to secure the release of accused persons from judicial custody.
Police registered a case on November 5 following a complaint by Law Inspector Prasanta Kumar Mallick of Brahmapur Police District. The complaint alleged that certain individuals were repeatedly producing identical land records as surety documents in different criminal cases, despite having no personal or family relationship with the accused persons.
Investigation revealed that four identified professional bailors had allegedly used the same land records in 32 instances across multiple cases. Bulu Routa (56) allegedly furnished the same RoR in 12 cases, Babula Nayak (66) in eight, and Venkat Prasad Pattnaik (60) and Sanyasi Mohanty (59) in six cases each.
Police conducted simultaneous raids on Friday and arrested Routa, Nayak and Pattnaik. Sanyasi Mohanty is yet to be arrested. The role of other suspected members of the network is also under investigation.
Three keypad mobile phones were seized from each of the arrested persons and are being examined for evidence.
Further investigation is underway to identify other members of the alleged racket, verify the authenticity of the land records used as surety documents and establish whether others facilitated the suspected fraud.
