Three years after her Asian Games medal was stripped, Parveen earns another

New Delhi, Sep 27 (UNI) Three years after an Asian Games medal was taken away from her, Parveen Hooda has earned another one the only way she could — inside the ring.
The Indian boxer secured at least a bronze on Sunday with a commanding 5-0 win over Uzbekistan’s Navbakhor Khamidova in the women’s 65kg quarterfinals, completing a remarkable return to the Asian Games podium in Aichi-Nagoya.
Parveen had won bronze at Hangzhou in 2023, but the medal was later stripped after she was handed a suspension for whereabouts failures between April 2022 and March 2023. The setback came just as the medal had appeared to put her on course for bigger ambitions, including the Olympics.
Instead, Parveen had to start again. Since returning from her suspension late last year, Parveen has moved up from 57kg to 65kg.
She announced her comeback in style by winning gold at the World Boxing Cup Finals in late 2025, but suffered another setback at the recent Commonwealth Games, where she lost a first-round split decision to Sacha Hickey.
In Aichi-Nagoya, however, Parveen, who had received a walkover in the previous round, looked composed from the opening bell against Khamidova. The Haryana pugilist controlled the distance, disrupted the Uzbek’s rhythm and stayed patient rather than getting drawn into unnecessary exchanges. Her discipline was reflected on the scorecards, with all five judges awarding her the bout.
The victory assures Parveen of a medal on her return to the continental showpiece and gives her another chance to add to a career that has already survived a suspension, the loss of an Asian Games medal and a difficult comeback.
Alongside Parveen, two more Indian boxers, Ankush Panghal and Narender Brewal also secured medals on the day while Sachin Siwach’s campaign ended in the last eight stage.
Narender ( 90kg) added another medal to his bronze from the previous edition after forcing the referee to stop his quarterfinal against Thailand's Adthapong Saengtep in less than two minutes. The Indian super heavyweight unleashed a barrage of heavy blows on his Thai opponent, forcing the referee to give Saengtep three standing counts before stopping the contest.
Ankush, who won Commonwealth Games gold last month in Glasgow, notched a 5-0 unanimous decision win over Tajikistan's Nekruz Salimov in the men's 80kg quarterfinal.
It was, however, the end of the campaign for Commonwealth Games champion Sachin, who went down 0-5 to local favourite Shunsuke Kitamoto of Japan in the men's 60kg quarterfinal.UNI TB AAB
