Tiger reintroduction in Buxa marks new chapter in conservation: Bengal minister Yadav

Siliguri, Oct 2 (UNI) The release of a tigress in Buxa Tiger Reserve today marked the beginning of a new chapter in tiger conservation in West Bengal, union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav said.
Describing the release as a fitting beginning to India’s Wildlife Week 2026, Yadav said it marked the initiation of a phased tiger reintroduction programme aimed at restoring a viable and self-sustaining tiger population in the historically important Buxa landscape.
In a social media post after the release, Yadav said that inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on landscape conservation and species protection, the promise of reintroducing tigers in Buxa had been fulfilled. He thanked Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari for their support in the successful reintroduction.
“The recovery of tigers in Buxa is also significant at the landscape level,” Yadav said, pointing to the ecological linkages of Buxa with North Bengal, Assam and Bhutan. These linkages, he said, provide opportunities for the movement and dispersal of wildlife across a larger connected landscape.
“Strengthening Buxa therefore has implications not only for tiger conservation but also for the conservation of forests, grasslands, prey species and wider biodiversity,” he said.
Yadav said the release represented the beginning of a new chapter in Buxa’s conservation journey. The measure of success, he said, would not be the number of tigers released but the establishment, over time, of a healthy, free-ranging and self-sustaining tiger population.
Such a population, he said, would depend on secure habitat, adequate prey, effective protection and ecological connectivity.
The three-year-old tigress was translocated from Bihar’s Valmiki Tiger Reserve and released into Buxa as part of the reintroduction programme. The initiative marks West Bengal’s first major tiger reintroduction exercise in Buxa. UNI MBN NST
