TN Cabinet gives nod to constitute Social Justice Commission for holding Social Justice survey

Chennai, Oct 29 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Vijay on Thursday gave its nod for forming the Social Justice Commission, paving the way for conducting the Social Justice Survey across the state in line with the announcement made in the Governor's maiden address to this Assembly on June 18.
Talking to reporters after the meeting, Electricity, Law and Prisons Minister CTR.Nirmal Kumar said the Social Justice Commission to be headed by a retired Judge with senior bureaucrats as Members, would be constituted around February-March next year after the centre completed its caste-based enumeration exercise. The panel will work out the modalities for conducting the social justice survey.
During his maiden customary address--to the newly constituted 17th Legislative Assembly--on the first day of the first session of the new TVK government headed by Chief Minister Vijay, Governor R.V.Arlekar had urged the Centre to conduct the caste census in conjunction with the ongoing population census after which it would conduct the Social Justice Survey in the state.
He said it was a fundamental policy of this Government that true social justice lies in every community getting due representation. "To fulfil this policy and promise, we will urge the union Government to swiftly complete the caste enumeration in conjunction with the ongoing Population Census. After the union Government completes the caste enumeration, the Government of Tamil Nadu will conduct the Social Justice Survey", he added.
Stating that the proposed survey will be different from the caste enumeration to be conducted by the Centre, Nirmal Kumar said it would involve a detailed socio-economic assessment of communities, including family income, occupation, land ownership, educational status, school and college enrolment, dropout rates and access to welfare schemes.
