Tripura: Animals sacrificed at temple amid Supreme Court restrictions

Agartala, Oct 20 (UNI) A buffalo and several goats were sacrificed at Durgabari temple in Agartala on Tuesday as part of the Maha Nabami rituals of Durga Puja.
The 150-year-old tradition was performed amidst the chanting of mantras. The location of the sacrifice was kept hidden from the public, in compliance with a Supreme Court directive, admitted temple priest Jayanta Bhattacharjee.
He stated that the tradition of animal sacrifice to Goddess Durga on Maha Nabami is a century-old practice integral to the worship at state sponsored temple. And, worship of Goddess Durga would be incomplete without animal sacrifice, he claimed.
In 2019, High Court of Tripura, led by then Chief Justice Sanjoy Karol, prohibited animal and bird sacrifices in temples across the state, including the 500- years old Maa Tripureswari temple.
However, the Supreme Court later stayed this High Court ruling following a petition, while imposing certain restrictions on animal sacrifices at temples, as it was an important element of Tripura’s merger agreement with Indian union in 1949.
Bhattacharjee mentioned that the police would provide a guard of honour to Goddess Durga at the temple on Dashami tomorrow. The holy pitcher would then be taken to Ujjayanta Palace, where the former royal family would bid farewell to the goddess.
Temple in-charge Pradip Debnath noted that there is no specific vegetarian or non-vegetarian menu for Goddess Durga at the temple. He explained that offerings to Goddess Durga consist of what devotees donate or sacrifice, and there are no restrictions on meat and fish.
The Durga Puja celebrations at the temple are organized by the West Tripura district administration on behalf of the Manikya dynasty.
The Maha Nabami rituals adhered to the temple's long-standing tradition, with the sacrifice conducted away from public view under Supreme Court restrictions.
