Tripura CM reiterates NHIDCL to ensure quality of roads

Agartala, June 29 (UNI) While pressing for quality work in a time-bound manner, Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha expressed concern over poor maintenance of several road projects by National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) in a recent review meeting.
NHIDCL has been accused of poor-quality construction of national highways in Tripura through local vendors at a low cost. As a result, all the roads they built were damaged badly within a year or two during the monsoon.
They were also accused of not paying compensation to the people who had given land for road construction.
NHIDCL officials have also been charged for felling hundreds of century-old trees in connivance with the corrupt officers of State Forest department.
The corruption of NHIDCL was discussed in the state assembly number of times and several MLAs including ruling party members have also made the demand to stop NHIDCL works in Tripura and return all the works to the state PWD.
In the meeting, CM directed to complete all pending repair works by September and said, “We must ensure quality and timely execution to prevent inconvenience to the public.”
However, NHIDCL authorities assured that an expert team from Central Road Research Institute has been engaged to assess the badly damaged portion of Khowai–Manikbhandar section of National Highway 108B.
Based on CRRI’s report, necessary corrective measures will be taken.
Additionally, an expert team from IIT Kharagpur has submitted its report on the structural failures along the Kanchanpur–Bhangmun section of Tripura-Mizoram road, and tenders have already been floated for remedial work.
