Tripura lists 2nd in NE with 14.4pc, launches breast cancer prevention campaign

Biswendu Bhattacharjee
Agartala, Oct 4 (UNI) To enhance public understanding and promote preventive measures pertaining to breast cancer, Tripura has initiated a comprehensive, month-long campaign aimed at increasing awareness about the pressing health issue.
Breast cancer has emerged as a significant concern, contributing to 14.4pc of all cancer cases among women in the state and impacting roughly 1 in every 123 women. In Northeast, Tripura holds the second-highest rate of breast cancer prevalence, following Manipur at 15.4pc.
The North-East cancer report reveals that a mere 28.4pc of breast cancer cases were identified at a localized stage, whereas a substantial 58.2pc reached the hospitals with distant metastasis, said Secretary, Health Kiran Gitte.
To foster widespread awareness throughout the month, the Tripura health department has partnered with AIIMS and Jhpiego to organize an array of activities spanning multiple levels. The objective is to elevate breast cancer awareness in Tripura while fortifying prevention, early detection efforts, and treatment services, he stated.
These include educational workshops, consultative forums with healthcare professionals and ASHA workers, seminar sessions at medical and paramedical colleges, engaging talk shows on various mass media outlets, dynamic social media campaigns, and direct awareness initiatives involving Panchayat representatives and local public figures, elaborated Gitte.
Moreover, activities focused on creating awareness at the village and community level will be organized during Village Health and Nutrition Days (VHNDs). These efforts are being spearheaded by Community Health Officers (CHOs) and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), with Jhpiego extending technical support to bolster this initiative.
On a national scale, India recorded approximately 237,231 new breast cancer cases and 96,100 associated deaths in 2024. Breast cancer constitutes about 30.4% of all cancer incidence among women across the country, he added.
Data derived from the ICMR Tripura Population-Based Cancer Registry (PBCR) between 2012 and 2016 underscore the health significance of breast cancer among Tripura's female population. Strategies have been designed to intensify population-based screening efforts for breast cancer among women aged 30 and above.
Emphasizing advancements in treatment infrastructure, Gitte highlighted that Tripura is augmenting access through District Day Care Cancer Centres (DCCCs). These centres are equipped to provide oral chemotherapy while efforts are underway to further enhance chemotherapy services, including intravenous options.
The strategies aim to increase awareness of breast cancer warning signs among women, strengthen referral and diagnostic linkages for individuals exhibiting suspicious symptoms, and promote comprehensive, stage-appropriate multidisciplinary treatment accompanied by patient navigation and psychosocial and palliative support services to effectively combat cancer in the state, Gitte mentioned.
