Tripura Minister urged Centre to assist restoration of Ramsar-designated site Rudrasagar

Agartala, Oct 31 (UNI) In a significant effort to safeguard Tripura’s natural heritage and enhance tourism, Higher Education Minister Kishore Barman has reached out to the Ministry of Jal Shakti, requesting assistance to restore and comprehensively develop Rudrasagar Lake, Tripura's only Ramsar Wetland of International Importance.
Barman, elected from the area, falls under Sepahijala district, said today that he met with the union Minister of State for Jal Shakti, Dr Raj Bhushan Choudhary, and discussed a variety of initiatives aimed at revitalizing the historic lake and unlocking its ecological, cultural, and tourism potential.
During the meeting, Barman underscored the pressing necessity for a detailed restoration plan that addresses the lake's current challenges. He urged several critical measures, including enhancing the lake’s water-holding depth, boosting its water-retention capacity, modernizing the water-flow management system, and revitalizing the confluences.
The minister highlighted that synchronized efforts and sufficient financial support would be vital for ensuring the lake's long-term conservation and sustainable development. Barman emphasized the importance of Rudrasagar as one of Tripura’s cherished natural and historical treasures.
He asserted that scientific restoration, improved water management, and strategic infrastructure development could position the lake as a major tourist attraction, all while maintaining its ecological integrity and natural allure.
He further noted that the proposed development initiative holds the potential to create job opportunities for residents, stimulate tourism-related businesses, and bolster the economies of surrounding communities.
Barman advocated for a sustainable development framework that would not only preserve the lake’s heritage but would also open up new pathways for livelihoods and regional advancement.
According to Barman, the union Minister acknowledged the concerns raised during their discussion and assured him that suitable actions would be taken promptly. Expressing optimism about a favourable outcome, he stated that the proposed initiative could usher in a new era for Rudrasagar’s development.
With continued efforts, scientific conservation practices, and backing from the central government, the historic lake is poised to become a landmark destination on India’s tourism landscape, safeguarding its natural legacy while yielding lasting advantages for future generations.
