Tripura pulls out forces, halts rest house construction in disputed border village

Aizawl, June 5 (UNI) In a significant de-escalation of border tensions, the Tripura government has withdrawn its security personnel and halted construction of a Forest Rest House at Thaidawr hill in the contentious Phuldungsei village, following intervention from the top police brass of both Mizoram and Tripura.
Mizoram Home Minister K. Sapdanga on Thursday confirmed that the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) platoon deployed at Thaidawr hill has been pulled back and two police check-gates dismantled after a telephonic conversation between the Directors General of Police (DGPs) of the two neighbouring states earlier this week.
According to Sapdanga, the Mizoram DGP conveyed a firm message to his Tripura counterpart on Tuesday, warning that the continued presence of TSR at the disputed site would compel Mizoram to station its armed police, which could further aggravate the situation. In response, Tripura withdrew its forces and halted ongoing construction activities at the site, defusing immediate tension.
“The withdrawal of forces and removal of the check-gates have eased tensions along the border,” Sapdanga said, adding that diplomatic engagement at the administrative level was ongoing to maintain peace in the area.
The Home Minister further revealed that the Deputy Commissioner of Mamit district in Mizoram had initiated both telephonic and written communication with the Deputy Commissioner of North Tripura district, urging the latter to honour the status quo in disputed areas and suspend all construction work at Thaidawr hill, which lies within Phuldungsei village—a village long claimed by both states.
In a notable development, construction of the Rs 3-crore government guest house by Tripura at Thaidawr hill has also been halted, following concerns raised by Mizoram. This follows a low-intensity explosion that damaged the under-construction guest house in the early hours of June 28, sparking heightened security concerns on both sides of the border.
To ensure broader coordination, Minister Sapdanga said he had directed Mizoram’s Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena to engage with his Tripura counterpart to further ease tensions and prevent any escalation.
Phuldungsei has remained a flashpoint along the 66-kilometre Mizoram–Tripura border, where occasional flare-ups and claims of jurisdiction from both sides have prevented resolution. Despite multiple incidents over the years, no high-level inter-state talks have yet been held to resolve the boundary dispute at this specific location.
The latest diplomatic manoeuvring and security pullback signal a pause in tensions, but the underlying issue of territorial claims remains unresolved, leaving the situation fragile and susceptible to renewed friction.
