Trump says US will end $4bn annual aid to Israel by year-end

Washington, Nov 3 (UNI) US President Donald Trump has said Washington will stop providing its annual $4 billion in funding to Israel by the end of this year, following an agreement with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Speaking to Fox News’ Fox & Friends on Tuesday, Trump said he and Netanyahu had reached an understanding months ago to end the payments, adding that Israel no longer needed the financial assistance.
“Bibi Netanyahu and I have made a deal that we give Israel $4 billion a year, and we made a deal months ago that we’re stopping,” Trump said.
“We’ve already agreed that by the end of this year we won’t be paying Israel. Now we’ll help Israel if they need it,” he added.
It was not immediately clear which specific funding arrangements Trump was referring to. Neither the Israeli prime minister’s office nor the US State Department immediately provided a response to his remarks.
The United States currently provides Israel with $3.8 billion annually in military assistance under a 10-year memorandum of understanding signed in 2016, which is due to expire in 2028. Discussions have been under way over the future of US assistance beyond that period.
Trump said Israel could purchase weapons independently, arguing that the country no longer required American financial support.
The comments come amid growing debate in the United States over Washington’s longstanding military and diplomatic backing of Israel, particularly since the outbreak of the war in Gaza in October 2023.
Public support for Israel has declined among American voters, with criticism becoming increasingly pronounced among Democratic voters and progressive lawmakers.
In July, the US House of Representatives rejected an amendment seeking to cut off aid to Israel by 314 votes to 104. Nearly half of Democratic lawmakers supported the measure, which was introduced by outgoing Republican Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said in a May interview with CBS that he hoped to phase out Israel’s reliance on US military assistance within a decade. In a June letter to a US congressman, he also called for Israel to transition from being an aid recipient to a partner.
Trump's remarks came as Americans voted in midterm elections to determine control of Congress, with Republicans seeking to retain their majorities in both chambers and Democrats attempting to regain control.
