US midterm Election Results: Democrats score early Senate wins as Cooper flips North Carolina seat

Washington, Nov 3 (UNI) Democrats secured early victories in key Senate races in the 2026 US midterm elections, with Roy Cooper flipping a Republican-held seat in North Carolina and Jon Ossoff winning re-election in Georgia, as control of Congress and the future of President Donald Trump's legislative agenda hang in the balance. According to CBS News projections, Cooper defeated Republican Michael Whatley in North Carolina, while Ossoff defeated Republican challenger Mike Collins in Georgia. Democrat Chris Pappas also won the Senate race in New Hampshire, retaining a seat already held by his party. Cooper's victory marks an important gain for Democrats in their bid to reclaim control of the Senate. The 69-year-old former two-term North Carolina governor defeated Whatley, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee who had campaigned with Trump's backing. The North Carolina contest was considered one of Democrats' strongest opportunities to capture a Republican-held seat after Republican Senator Thom Tillis decided against seeking re-election.
North Carolina has not elected a Democratic senator since 2008. Trump won the state by three percentage points in the 2024 presidential election, making the contest particularly significant for both parties. Cooper centred his campaign on economic concerns and affordability, using the slogan "make stuff cost less". Whatley, meanwhile, campaigned on implementing Trump's agenda and promoting conservative values. The president's support for the war in Iran and concerns over rising petrol prices also emerged as campaign issues, with Whatley's close association with Trump proving a potential liability. In Georgia, Ossoff defeated Collins, further strengthening Democratic influence in the politically competitive state.
Ossoff, a rising figure in the Democratic Party, made the rising cost of living a central theme of his campaign and portrayed Collins as an ally of what he described as a "failed president". He also criticised Collins, a sitting member of the House of Representatives, for supporting Trump's tariffs, which Democrats have linked to rising inflation.
Collins, in turn, blamed former President Joe Biden for the rising cost of living and defended his support for Trump's war in Iran. Republicans had hoped to make the Georgia contest competitive but reportedly diverted resources to other Senate races after polling indicated Ossoff has established a comfortable lead. Georgia voted for Trump in 2024 after narrowly backing Biden in 2020, making Ossoff's projected victory a significant setback for Republicans. The early results came as polls closed in 25 states and the District of Columbia, with votes still being counted across the country. Early exit polls also indicated a difficult political environment for Trump, with only 38 per cent of respondents approving of his performance, potentially putting him on course for the lowest presidential approval rating recorded in a midterm election. Democrats need to flip four Republican-held seats to gain control of the Senate while defending several seats of their own. UNI AAB
