Two passengers injured after ceiling portion falls at CSMT; Railway orders safety audit

Mumbai, Oct 23 (UNI) – Two passengers sustained injuries after a portion of the ceiling near the booking hall entrance at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) collapsed late Thursday night, leading railway authorities to order a safety audit of the ongoing work being carried out by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) at the station.
According to Central Railway's Mumbai Division, the incident took place at around 2205 hrs on October 22, when a section of the ceiling near the booking hall entrance gave way. The affected area is part of the premises where RLDA-related work is underway.
The injured passengers were identified as Vinayak Balu Hatkar, 28, and Ayan Naushad Matwankar, 24. Both were shifted to the casualty department of St George's Hospital for medical attention and further clinical assessment.
Hatkar sustained a lacerated wound measuring around 3–4 cm on the right parietal region of his scalp. The injury was treated with sutures.
Matwankar suffered a laceration over his left upper eyelid, abrasions on the right scapular region and neck, besides pain and swelling in his right ankle. He is also undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Following the incident, railway officials visited the site to inspect the affected portion. A safety audit of the work being undertaken by RLDA has been ordered to assess the condition of the site and examine the safety aspects of the ongoing activity.
CSMT, one of Mumbai's major railway terminals, handles a substantial volume of suburban and long-distance passenger traffic. The incident has brought attention to the need for adequate precautions at passenger access points where construction or redevelopment work is in progress.
Further details about the cause of the collapse and the outcome of the safety audit were not immediately available.
