UDP faces major setback in Meghalaya as Mawthoh resigns

Shillong, May 31 (UNI) The United Democratic Party, an ally of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) in Meghalaya, has suffered a
suffered a significant political blow as veteran leader Jemimo Mawthoh quit the party.
In his resignation letter addressed to UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh, Mawthoh said he tendered his resignation as member of the party and also relinquished his post as General Secretary with immediate effect due to unavoidable circumstances.
“This decision is purely personal and I strongly hold my ground on this matter,” the former UDP legislator stated in the letter.
Mawthoh said that he it was a privileged for him to serve the party as a legislator, working president from2014 and as a general secretary from 2016 till date.
Expressing his sincere thanks for the opportunities that the UDP has given him all those years to serve the people of his Nongthymmai assembly constituency, Mawthoh also acknowledged the support of his fellow co-workers during his tenure in various capacities in the UDP.
Mawthoh also informed the UDP president that he has also resigned as honorary adviser, Planning, Investment Promotion and Sustainable Development department, Government of Meghalaya.
Earlier, Senior Cabinet Minister and Working President of UDP, Paul Lyngdoh confirmed the resignation of Mawthoh from the party.
“Jemino wants to concentrate more in the University,” Lyngdoh said.
Mawthoh , an associate professor in the Department of Adult and Continuing Education of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), was a former member of Meghalaya assembly.
The UDP has 12 members in the 60-member Meghalaya assembly and two of them are cabinet ministers in the Conrad Sangma-led ministry.
