UN mission says reasonable evidence to believe US carried out war crimes in initial hours of Iran war

New York, Sep 18 (UNI) A UN fact-finding mission said on Thursday there were reasonable grounds to believe the US committed war crimes during two strikes in Iran in the opening hours of the current war, while also finding that Iranian authorities committed crimes against humanity during their deadly crackdown on anti-government protests before the conflict.
The findings are contained in a new report by the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran, which is due to be presented to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. The investigation examined US conduct during the war as well as the Iranian government's response to nationwide unrest that began in late December.
The report focuses on two US strikes on February 28. One hit the Shajareh Tayyebeh Primary School in the southern Iranian city of Minab, killing more than 150 people, including around 120 children, according to Iranian officials. The other struck a sports centre in Lamerd, killing or injuring nearly two dozen people.
