Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar says North Bengal University VC issue likely to be resolved soon

Siliguri, Oct 4 (UNI) union Minister of State for Education and Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Dr. Sukanta Majumdar on Sunday said that the long-pending issue of the appointment of a Vice-Chancellor at the University of North Bengal was expected to be resolved soon.
Speaking to reporters in Siliguri, Dr Majumdar said the absence of a Vice-Chancellor at the university was unfortunate and had its roots in the earlier differences between the state government and the Governor during the previous period.
“The unfortunate thing is that there was a dispute between the state and the Governor during the time of the previous government. As a result, the University of North Bengal is without a Vice-Chancellor,” Dr Majumdar said.
He said he had already spoken to the state Education Minister on the issue. The state government, he added, would inform the Supreme Court and the High Court that there was no longer any dispute between the state government and the Governor.
“Hopefully, the problem will be resolved after that,” he said.
Dr Majumdar arrived in Siliguri on Sunday before proceeding to Gangtok for a two-day official visit to Sikkim. He attended the 25th anniversary celebrations of the North Bengal Alumni Association along with Tourism Minister Dr Shankar Ghosh and School Education Minister Dipak Barman.
Dr Majumdar and Dr Ghosh, both former students of the University of North Bengal’s Botany Department, also attended a programme at the department before leaving for Sikkim.
According to the Sikkim government, Dr Majumdar has been accorded State Guest status during his October 4–5 visit. He was received at Bagdogra Airport by officials of the Sikkim government before proceeding to Gangtok for his scheduled engagements.
