UP expanding investment, employment opportunities in food processing sector: Deputy CM Maurya

Lucknow, Sep 30 (UNI) Expressing satisfaction over the decisions taken at the 22nd State-Level Empowered Committee (SLEC) meeting under the Uttar Pradesh Food Processing Industry Policy-2023 and the continued progress in the food processing sector, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya stated that the state government is continuously working to strengthen the agriculture-based economy, enhance the value of farmers' produce, and create new employment and self-employment opportunities for youth and women.
A meeting held on Wednesday under the chairmanship of the Agriculture Production Commissioner, Government of Uttar Pradesh, and the Chairman of the State-Level Empowered Committee discussed in detail the progress of schemes under the Food Processing Industry Policy-2023, new investment proposals, financial incentives, and various entrepreneur-related issues.
According to the progress presented at the meeting, a total of 1,975 applications have been received under the policy as of September 15, 2026, of which 580 proposals have been approved, and Letters of Comfort (LOC) have been issued for the related projects. In the financial year 2026-27, 291 new applications have been received as of September 29, 2026. An amount of Rs 132.61 crore has been disbursed so far as the first and second installments for the approved proposals.
The meeting considered 51 new proposals under the Policy-2023. These include projects related to various value-added food products, including frozen fruit and vegetable processing, cattle feed, dehydrated fruits and vegetables, sweets, snacks, bakery and ice cream, frozen ready-to-eat products, potato flakes, soy products, dairy and milk products, pulse and flour processing, edible oils, and solar-based food processing units.
New proposals also include proposals for the establishment of solar-based food processing plants by various entities, including women's entrepreneur groups. These include ready-to-cook food products, flour, spices, pulse mills, rice mills, soy products, breadcrumbs, fruit juices, canned fruits and vegetables, and jaggery-based units.
The Prime Minister's Micro Food Processing Enterprises Upgradation Scheme (PMFME) was also reviewed in the meeting. So far, loans have been approved for the establishment of 28,356 units in the state, and grants worth Rs 1,040 crore have been distributed to 24,883 units.
Uttar Pradesh ranked first in the country by approving loans for the establishment of 8,296 units in the financial year 2025-26. In the current financial year 2026-27, loans have been approved for the establishment of 3,198 units, and grants worth Rs 271 crore have been distributed to 7,643 beneficiary entrepreneurs during the same period.
Deputy CM Maurya said that increased investment in the food processing sector will provide farmers with better prices for their produce, enhance the value of agricultural products, and increase employment opportunities in rural areas. He stated that the state government's priority is to ensure that the benefits of schemes reach eligible individuals in a transparent and timely manner.
