UP plans Art Camps to pass traditional skills from masters to new generation

Lucknow, Sep 24 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh is planning to bring young artists into the studio with established practitioners of folk and traditional painting, combining practical training with documentation of techniques to help artistic knowledge pass to a new generation.
Three proposed art programmes in Ayodhya, Lucknow and Varanasi between October and December will bring together this emphasis on learning with creative interpretations of the state’s heritage. The Culture Department’s calendar, being developed through the State Lalit Kala Akademi and partner institutions, draws on Ramayan traditions, folk painting and the cultural life of the Ganga.
A key part of the effort is ‘Lokdhara’, planned in Lucknow from November 18 to 22. Around 35 to 40 folk and traditional artists would participate alongside 25 selected senior art students from institutions in and around the city.
The proposed participants include Padma Shri recipients Durgabai Vyam, Bhuri Bai, Shivan Paswan, Paresh Rathwa and Shyam Sharma, along with miniature painter Mahaveer Swami.
UP Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said the programmes would bring the experience of established artists into direct contact with emerging talent. “Our aim is to pass this knowledge to young artists, help traditional art forms develop in a contemporary context and present Uttar Pradesh’s living cultural heritage through fresh creative expression,” he said.
At Lokdhara, students would watch paintings take shape, practise techniques and receive guidance through live demonstrations, masterclasses and discussions. Gond, Bhil, Godna, Pithora, Rajasthani, Kohbar and Madhubani traditions are among the styles proposed for the camp, which would conclude with a display of completed works.
The calendar begins in Ayodhya with ‘Ram, Ramayan and Ayodhya’, a national workshop and lecture series planned from October 22 to 26 in collaboration with Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University. With 25 artists and 10 experts proposed to participate, it would explore the city’s cultural traditions through art and discussion. Ram ki Paidi and Guptar Ghat are among the proposed venues.
Varanasi would host ‘Kashi Flow’, a four-day international art camp and exhibition proposed for the second week of December on the Ganga riverfront. Planned jointly by Ganga Mahasabha and the State Lalit Kala Akademi, it would centre on the relationship between the river, the city, its people and its spiritual traditions.
Its proposed participants include Prof S Pranam Singh, Vijay Singh, Prof Satyawan Singh Bawani, Prof Saroj Rani, Dr Gopal Prasad, Rajkumar Ghosh and Dr Shubhra Nag, among others, bringing different artistic perspectives to Kashi’s living heritage.
Additional Chief Secretary, Tourism, Culture and Religious Affairs, Amrit Abhijat, said the programmes were intended to build sustained interaction among artists, educational institutions and communities.
“Lokdhara will give emerging artists practical experience and opportunities to create new works under the guidance of senior practitioners. We also plan to document artistic techniques and processes so that this knowledge can be carried forward,” he said.
The possibility of developing Lokdhara into an annual event is also being explored, providing scope for continued mentorship and collaboration beyond the five-day camp.
