US-China reach consensus on lowering tariffs for $30bn worth ‘non sensitive goods’

Washington/Beijing, Sep 26 (UNI) The US and China have reached a consensus on tariff relief covering $30 billion of “non-sensitive goods” in each direction, as part of an economic package agreed during US President Donald Trump’s summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the White House said.
The arrangement marks a further easing of trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies found themselves engaged in an all-out tariff war which kept on intensifying in 2025.
Under the agreement, China will provide more favourable tariff treatment for a range of US exports, including agricultural goods, fish and seafood, logs and wood products, cosmetics and medical devices. The United States will do the same for Chinese imports including small appliances, toys, holiday decorations and children’s car seats.
The White House said the measures were agreed through the US-China Board of Trade, which was established at the leaders’ previous summit in May. The two countries also launched a working group focused on market-access barriers in agriculture.
The package includes a commitment from China to import at least 10 million metric tonnes of US coal in 2027 and another 10 million tonnes in 2028. Beijing sharply reduced coal imports from the US in 2025 as trade tensions between the two countries escalated.
The White House fact sheet was less specific on rare earths and other critical minerals, which have remained one of the most sensitive issues in the trade dispute.
“The United States and China continue to work on U.S. concerns regarding supply chain shortages related to rare earths and other critical minerals, with the goal of ensuring shipment levels return to appropriate levels,” it said.
Rare earth minerals have been a major source of leverage for Beijing in its trade relationship with Washington due to their application across a range of technology and industrial sectors.
The two sides have continued discussions on easing supply-chain constraints, but the latest agreement does not set out specific new commitments on mineral shipments.
The tariff measures were announced after Trump and Xi met during Xi’s state visit to the US, which the White House described as the first visit by a Chinese president to the White House in more than a decade.
