Iran FM Araghchi calls for non-discriminatory implementation of international law

Tehran, Sep 19 (UNI) Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called for the non-discriminatory implementation of international law and urged the international community to move away from militarism and interventionism towards sustainable development, respect for national sovereignty and lasting peace.
Addressing an event on Saturday, Araghchi said the world needed “genuine, effective, and fair multilateralism” more than ever.
“If international law is disregarded whenever the interests of major powers dictate, one can no longer speak of the rule of law. If human rights are an inherent right for some nations and a conditional privilege for others, they can no longer be called universal,” he said.
Speaking at the conference titled “Calling for a Global U-Turn — Recentering Development, Reclaiming Humanity, Restoring Justice in a Crazi(er) World”, Araghchi said the international community needed a fundamental change of course as war, intervention, sanctions and the use of force had increasingly become policy tools.
“We must move away from militarism and interventionism toward sustainable development, respect for national sovereignty, protection of civilians, and lasting peace,” he said.
On the situation in West Asia, Araghchi said sustainable security could not be imposed from outside the region and that regional countries should find solutions through dialogue and cooperation.
“Sustainable security cannot be dictated from outside the region. The countries of the region must find their own solutions without interference from foreign powers,” he said.
He said Iran viewed dialogue, confidence-building, cooperation and mutual respect among regional countries as the basis for sustainable security, rather than the military presence of foreign powers.
“The world we live in needs a fundamental change of course more than ever, because war, intervention, sanctions, and the use of force have become normal policy tools rather than exceptions,” Araghchi said.
The Iranian foreign minister also said decades of foreign intervention, military pressure and prolonged conflicts in the Middle East had demonstrated, in Iran’s view, that military intervention could not create lasting security and that pressure and coercion could not produce peace.
Araghchi condemned military aggression by the United States and Israel against Iran and the targeted killing of Iranian officials. He warned that failure by the international community to respond effectively to such actions would gradually erode the boundaries established by international law.
He further said that if international institutions, including the United Nations, were unable to respond to aggression and hold violators of international law accountable, their credibility and legitimacy would be weakened.
“Today’s world needs genuine multilateralism more than ever,” Araghchi said, reiterating his call for a shift from militarism towards sustainable development, from interventionism towards respect for national sovereignty, and from prolonged conflict towards lasting peace.UNI AAB
