Use of 'Press Council' name prohibited without permission: PCI Secretary

Hyderabad, May 23 (UNI) The Press Council of India (PCI) has reiterated that the name "Press Council" should not be used by individuals or organisations without prior permission.
PCI Secretary Shubha Gupta has issued a letter to the Chief Secretaries of all states, urging them to ensure that such violations are prevented.
Gupta clarified that the Press Council of India operates solely from its headquarters at Soochna Bhavan, CGO Complex, Lodhi Road, New Delhi, and has no branches in any state. No individual or entity has been authorised to use the term “Press Council,” she emphasised.
She further stated that the use of the term “Press Council” (Press Parishad) by unauthorised individuals or press organisations is strictly prohibited. The Union Ministry of Law and Justice has also supported this view, asserting that the term must not be used by any entity without express approval from the Central Government.
Such misuse constitutes a violation under Section 3, read with Entry 7(ii), of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act, 1950. Unauthorized use of the name could harm the reputation of the Press Council of India, Gupta warned.
In light of this, the PCI has requested all state governments to direct local bodies and government associations to deny registration or recognition to any organisation using the name “Press Council,” an official statement said here on Friday.
