Vigilance probe ordered into construction lapses in Mundamveli Life Mission flats

Kochi, Sep 30 (UNI) Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has ordered a Vigilance inquiry into serious construction lapses in the Life Mission flats built at Mundamveli in Rameswaram village of Ernakulam's Thoppumpady.
The flats, constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 17 crore to rehabilitate 77 families from the Gandhi Nagar P&T Colony, developed serious defects within 10 days of residents moving in after their inauguration in October 2023.
The septic tank started overflowing and water began seeping through the walls, leaving the flats unfit for habitation.
The Vigilance preliminary inquiry will examine alleged lapses by the Thrissur District Labour Contract Cooperative Society, which was entrusted with the construction, as well as the GCDA engineering wing responsible for overseeing the work.
Those facing the preliminary inquiry include GCDA Superintending Engineer J.B. John, Executive Engineers Shaji and Davis, Assistant Executive Engineers Athira and Jayashree, and Sindhu Subhash, secretary of the Thrissur District Labour Contract Cooperative Society.
The decision to order the Vigilance probe came after serious lapses were found in the construction and supervision of the project.
