VPP backs Meghalaya Bar Associations' demand to sack Advocate General

Shillong, Oct 8 (UNI) The opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) has extended its support to the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association, the Shillong Bar Association, and other Bar Associations in the state in their united demand for the removal of Advocate General Amit Kumar.
Lawyers across Meghalaya have been on an indefinite, statewide judicial boycott since October 1, following the state government’s failure to remove Kumar as Advocate General and object to the continued appearance of both the Advocate General and other outstation panel advocates.
The demand for Kumar’s removal stemmed from submissions he allegedly made during a hearing before the Meghalaya High Court, where he stated that “there are many sexual harassment cases within Shillong’s legal fraternity.”
In a statement, VPP President Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit said the party stood in solidarity with the lawyers, particularly over the remarks allegedly made by the Advocate General questioning the ability of the Bar to protect its women members, in a case involving a woman intern.
Describing Kumar’s remarks as “highly insensitive and unacceptable”, Basaiawmoit alleged that the state government had failed to honour assurances given to the legal fraternity.
Though the Deputy Chief Minister and the CM have assured the Bar that the Advocate General would no longer appear for the government, yet he continues to appear in the court,” the VPP legislator said.
“This is a direct betrayal of the assurance given to the entire legal fraternity and proves that this Government does not respect its own word,” Basaiawmoit said.
Questioning the appointment of an Advocate General from outside the state, the VPP President argued that Meghalaya has several senior and experienced local advocates capable of holding the post.
“We have many senior, competent, and meritorious local advocates who are fully capable of holding the post. Why must the state spend crores of public money to bring in lawyers from outside, appointing an outsider who does not understand the sentiments of our people?” Basaiawmoit questioned.
This also raises serious questions about the alleged appointment of his close relatives to the state panel and the wasteful expenditure of public money,” he added.
Expressing concern over the ongoing judicial boycott, the opposition VPP leader said that the sole responsibility for this disruption in justice delivery lies with the government.
“Because of the adamant and arrogant attitude of the government, courts have been boycotted since October 1, and it is the common man seeking justice who is suffering,”he said.
The party has demanded the removal of Kumar as Advocate General of Meghalaya, alongside an independent inquiry into allegations of misuse of public funds and irregular appointments within the Advocate General’s office.
The VPP also demanded the appointment of a qualified, senior advocate from Meghalaya as the next Advocate General.
