Weights and Measures Dept checks prasad shops at Mansa Devi temple ahead of Ashwin fair

Panchkula, Oct 7 (UNI) Haryana's Weights and Measures Department carried out a surprise inspection of prasad shops at the Mata Mansa Devi temple complex in Panchkula ahead of the Ashwin fair, checking electronic weighing scales and the weight of packaged offerings to guard against short-weighing of devotees.
The inspection, led by department Inspector Ashok Kumar, covered prasad packets displayed on shop counters as well as stocks kept inside the shops. Officials also randomly weighed packaged prasad to check whether the quantity supplied matched the stated weight.
No irregularity was detected during Tuesday's inspection, with all electronic weighing scales and prasad packets checked by the team found to be in order, Kumar said.
“We carried out random checks of prasad packets kept on counters as well as those stocked inside the shops. Their weight was also verified. All the packets and electronic weighing scales checked during the inspection were found to be correct,” he said.
The department said the inspection assumes significance ahead of the Ashwin fair, scheduled from October 11 to 20, when the temple complex is expected to see increased footfall and a corresponding rise in prasad sales.
Kumar said teams would maintain a close watch on all shops during the fair and action would be taken against traders found violating weights and measures regulations.
The special checking drive is being conducted on the directions of the Controller of Weights and Measures, Chandigarh, he said.
Officials said inspections were not confined to the fair period and that electronic weighing machines and packaged prasad at shops in the temple complex were checked periodically.
Kumar said the department had issued challans to some shopkeepers last year after their electronic weighing scales were found to be unverified, indicating that enforcement action would again follow if violations were detected this year.
The inspection aims to ensure that devotees purchasing prasad receive the quantity they pay for and that traders use properly verified weighing equipment. UNI KK CDS
