West Bengal Assembly Speaker Rathindra Basu hospitalised after chest pain

Kolkata, Oct 3 (UNI) West Bengal Assembly Speaker Rathindra Basu was admitted to a hospital near the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass on Friday night after he complained of sudden and severe chest pain.
Hospital sources said his condition is stable and he is currently under observation.
According to family sources, Basu had attended programmes at the state Assembly during the day to mark Gandhi Jayanti and the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.
He also took part in several other engagements.
After returning home following the programmes, Basu suddenly experienced severe chest pain.
His family members immediately took him to a hospital, where doctors began treatment and conducted several medical examinations.
His condition subsequently improved, hospital sources said. Doctors are continuing to monitor him.
Basu was elected Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly unopposed on May 15 this year.
He represents Cooch Behar South as a BJP legislator and won an Assembly election for the first time in 2026.
A chartered accountant by profession, Basu had been associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for several years before entering active politics.
In the 2026 Assembly election, he defeated Trinamool candidate Abhijit De Bhowmik from Cooch Behar South by more than 23,000 votes.
