West Bengal BJP chief calls Trinamool ‘dead’, questions party’s political credibility

Kolkata, Oct 2 (UNI) West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya on Friday described the Trinamool Congress as a politically defunct organisation, alleging that it had lost its identity, organisational cohesion and credibility, and questioned its ability to function as an effective opposition.
Bhattacharya made these remarks after payingnobeisance to Mahatma Gandhi on Gandhi Jayanti at Gandhi Bhavan in Beleghata.
Bhattacharya said the state was moving beyond what he described decades of one-party dominance, with the BJP focusing on development, employment generation, women's empowerment and improving education.
"The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is no more. It is dead. It has no name, no identity, no symbol, no bank account. Nobody even knows who is on which side," he said.
Arguing that a credible opposition was indispensable to democracy, Bhattacharya said the Trinamool had lost the confidence of people to such an extent that they no longer regarded it as a genuine opposition force.
Referring to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari's political transition from the Trinamool to the BJP, Bhattacharya recalled how slogans accusing him of corruption had once been raised against him in several parts of Kolkata.
He claimed that the political situation had since changed, pointing to Durga Puja hoardings in South Kolkata featuring Adhikari and announcing the fact that he wull inaugurate the pujas.
"The time has come to come out of this hangover," he said, referring to what he portrayed as the Trinamool's lingering belief in its past political dominance.
Taking aim at the CPI(M), Bhattacharya appealed to veteran Left leader Biman Basu to exercise greater discipline within the party and questioned its inability to attract younger members.
Citing what he said were the CPI(M)'s own organisational records, he claimed that members below 30 years of age constituted less than 30 per cent of its membership.
Bhattacharya described Basu as a respected figure despite their ideological differences, adding that political disagreements should not be extended to personal or family matters.
On Gandhi Jayanti, Bhattacharya alleged that the Congress had embraced Mahatma Gandhi without following his ideals, while crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi with carrying forward his vision.
He said Modi had called upon every BJP MP, MLA and party leader to undertake productive activities on the occasion.
Bhattacharya also credited Modi's leadership with strengthening India's economic growth despite the challenges posed by the Covid pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war. UNI SEN SAS
