Nashik, Oct 26 (UNI) The Maharashtra government has decided to waive the 25 per cent land transfer fee applicable to internal transfers of land acquired for new renewable energy projects, including solar and wind power projects.
The decision is expected to reduce the financial burden on companies, lower project costs and accelerate investments in the state's renewable energy sector.
The decision was taken by Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on the direction of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Under the Maharashtra Tenancy and Agricultural Lands Act, a transfer fee equivalent to 25 pc of the market value of land, calculated according to the Ready Reckoner rates, was payable to the District Collector when land purchased for industrial purposes was transferred.
For large renewable energy projects, companies often need to transfer land from the parent company to a separate subsidiary established for a specific project. Such transfers may be necessary to secure bank loans or attract foreign investors. Although the ownership remains within the same corporate group and the transaction is essentially an internal, documentary transfer, the 25 pc fee significantly increased project costs.
The government observed that this financial burden was causing delays in the development of renewable energy projects. Accordingly, the latest decision has been taken in line with the resolution passed at the State Cabinet meeting held on August 18, 2026.
The government has stipulated that the land receiving the benefit of exemption must be used exclusively for renewable energy development.
"If a company subsequently uses the land for residential, commercial or any other purpose, or sells it to a third party, the exemption will be cancelled immediately. The entire waived transfer fee will then be recovered along with interest."
The government expects the measure to facilitate project implementation, reduce additional expenditure and encourage large-scale investment in Maharashtra's green energy sector.
Minister Bawankule said, “This decision will eliminate the additional financial burden on companies, generate savings in project costs and provide greater encouragement to large investments in the green energy sector in Maharashtra.”
