Woman held in Gurugram for allegedly extorting Rs 90 lakh, threatening false rape case

Gurugram, Oct 6 (UNI) Gurugram Police have arrested a 24-year-old woman for allegedly blackmailing a man and extorting around Rs 90 lakh from him by threatening to implicate him in a false rape case, officials said. Police said Rs 50,000 in cash was recovered from her possession, while around Rs 95 lakh in her bank account has been frozen as part of the investigation.
The case came to light after the complainant approached police on October 4, alleging that he had met the woman around three-years-ago through an online application. The two subsequently remained in contact through online chats, exchanged mobile numbers and started meeting each other.
According to the complaint, the woman later allegedly began blackmailing him and repeatedly demanding money. She purportedly threatened to implicate him in a false rape case and harm his family if he failed to meet her demands.
Police said the complainant alleged that he had already paid around Rs 90 lakh to the woman through bank transactions as well as in cash. Despite this, she allegedly continued to demand more money and threatened him with legal action if he refused.
Taking the complaint seriously, a team from Sadar police station, Gurugram, laid a trap after the woman allegedly asked the complainant to bring Rs 50,000 to a coffee house on Sohna Road in Sector 47.
The police team reached the location in plain clothes and kept the proceedings under surveillance.
The woman was allegedly caught red-handed while accepting Rs 50,000 in cash from the complainant. Police recovered the entire amount from her possession, and some of the currency notes reportedly bore signatures or initials put by the police team beforehand.
The accused was identified as Suryadita Das, 24, an MBA graduate from West Bengal, currently residing in Sushant Lok, Gurugram.
During questioning, police allegedly found that the accused had met the complainant through an online application about three years ago. Investigators said the initial online interaction later developed into regular meetings, following which the woman allegedly started demanding money by threatening the complainant.
Police said the investigation so far indicates that around Rs 90 lakh may have been obtained from the complainant through alleged blackmailing, while further demands were being made at the time of her arrest.
A case has been registered against the accused under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Sadar police station, Gurugram. She was produced before a court on October 4 and was remanded to two days of police custody.
As part of the investigation, Gurugram Police have also got around Rs 95 lakh in the accused's bank account frozen in accordance with law. Further investigation into the financial transactions and other aspects of the case is underway.
Gurugram Police have appealed to people facing blackmail, threats or illegal demands for money not to panic or take risks on their own, but to immediately approach the police.
