Women not safe in Odisha: AICC Fact-Finding Team

Bhubaneswar, June 24 (UNI) A fact-finding team from the All India Congress Committee (AICC), which investigated several gang rape cases across different parts of Odisha, stated today that women are not safe in the state, not even in the Chief Minister’s own home district.
The five-member team, led by former National Commission for Women Chairperson Deepa Dasmunsi, visited Gopalpur, Tikabali, and Harichandanpur between June 21 and 23 to gather first-hand information on incidents of gang rape and atrocities against women.
Addressing a press conference here, Dasmunsi said they spent three days in the affected areas to understand the plight of recent gang rape victims in Odisha. During the visit, the team met families of the victims, villagers, local leaders, police officials, and district administrators.
"I am returning from Odisha with a heavy heart. We wanted to share our findings directly with the Chief Minister to give him a clear picture of the growing violence against women in the state," she said.
"But the Chief Minister did not make time to meet us on such a sensitive issue, which only reflects his insensitivity toward the plight of women."
The AICC team expressed grave concern over the recent gang rape in Gopalpur, the rape and murder of a minor girl in the Chief Minister's home district, and the alarming rise in cases of missing women and children across the state.
“Incidents of missing women and rape have become daily occurrences. The women of Odisha are pleading with us for protection,” Dasmunsi said.
She added that the team would submit a detailed report on these heartbreaking incidents to the party’s central leadership and raise the issue in both Houses of Parliament.
Referring to history, Dasmunsi said, “In the past, a Congress government in the state was toppled over the Anjana Mishra case. Today, there are hundreds of such cases, yet the government remains a mute spectator.”
Rajya Sabha MP Ranjeet Ranjan alleged that due to the unholy nexus of liquor, drug mafias, and the ruling establishment, perpetrators of such heinous crimes are roaming freely without fear of conviction.
Former National Women’s Congress leader Shobha Oja claimed that in Odisha, one child faces abuse every five kilometers, and one child goes missing every ten kilometers — a distressing statistic.
"In a culturally rich state like Odisha, it is unfortunate that the dominant headlines today are about corruption and rape," said Solapur MP Praniti Shinde.
The team members concluded that women in Odisha are living in constant fear. “People voted for the BJP with great expectations, but this government has let them down,” they said.
MP Ranjeet Ranjan added, “The so-called double-engine government in Odisha has completely failed to protect women.”
